In terms of global conditions, the English language has been a significant and important influence. Economic globalization has lead to a quick expansion of the English language in all countries around the world. For this reason, as well as the advancements of technology, the English language has become a bridge among most cultures. Many experts believe that the expansion of the English language should not only be accepted, but also encouraged.

Because of the advancements in communication technologies, and the increase in travel to other countries, learning English not only helps one learn about other cultures and customs, but it also helps to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. When understanding another’s language, one is introduced to a new culture and customs which thereby reduces the chance of conflicts. It will also help one see other points of view and understand how they express it.

Although traveling to other countries may often seem like a venture for those who have money, with the internet, one can virtually travel to an English speaking country. With a click of the ‘mouse,’ one now has the ability to meet and converse with native English speakers. By understanding the English language, one will understand common phrases, meanings, and jargon, which promotes a better understanding of one’s culture and practices. As well, many cultures believe that their customs are the best. Exploring a foreign culture with knowledge of the English language will help one see and appreciate another way of looking at things. For instance, by visiting a museum in another country that speaks English as their native language, one will learn and appreciate the art they are viewing and will acquire a deeper understanding of that countries culture.

Because of globalization, businesses, governments, and organizations are now more connected than ever. Understanding and speaking the English language will encourage international cooperation and diplomacy. Areas such as international health care, humanitarian aid, and technological advancements, are bringing the world together like it has never been before. Many international organizations mandate that all people involved speak English, given that the translation costs would be enormous. Communicating and understanding one another is essential to global success and well being.

Learning English is also seen as a way of promoting peace. Understanding each other’s language, customs, and practices, will help minimize any misunderstandings which could lead to a personal offense. As well, communication and understanding is essential to resolving conflicts between two countries. Nations must understand one another culturally, socially, and politically, in order to engage in meaningful and productive discussions.

Culturally speaking, the advantages of learning English have too many benefits to be ignored. Learning English as a second language while maintaining one’s own sense of pride in their native tongue will help maintain one’s traditions while learning about another culture. Traveling abroad and communicating with English speakers either socially or in business allows one to embrace another culture and develop an appreciation and understanding of the differences, and even reveal many common traits. It will help tear down cultural barriers, dispel myths, and promote an overall sense of peace and prosperity.
