Everybody who owns a website or has an online business or services to offer, likes to be listed on search engines and come in the first few results at least. Search engines like Google and yahoo are most used by people all over the world. When you successfully list your website with these popular search engines, people find your website sooner and start linking it to people they know. Now that you have realized that linking can help you grow your business and increase the popularity of your site, you would have already found ways of how to ask one to link to your site. But however, there are many people all over the net who seem to be great in SEO but lack the proper practices in asking for a link. Here I explain the wrong ways some website owners and service providers have used to ask people to link to their site and help you in not repeating them again.

The most common ay to ask people to link is by mailing them. Collect a large database of valid emails and send an email asking them to link to your site. However do not make any mistakes listed below or you may be ignored as a spammer like every other SEO experts who put in mistakes and fail to bring in traffic.

Here are a few wrong ways of asking for a link by emails along with ways to correct them:

Be specific in addressing the recipient: Almost all us the word Webmaster in addressing a person whom they ask for a link. This usually is a general word that is often used when one sends mail to a number of webmasters. Using this word gives the recipient an impression that the mail has been forwarded to many people too like him and hence he doesn’t care much to link to your site. So effectively, if everyone ignores your message this way, you are wasting your time with no links to gain. The best way to address a webmaster is to create a personalized mail and present it in a way such that he must do the favor for you.

1. Do not be demanding: When you are ASKING for links, you must be polite. That’s the rule of the world in anything you go for. When you are requesting for a link, do not write any statements that sound demanding. Also do not ask for specific type of links such as non footer links or blogger links only and do not place any conditions since they are not someone you have a right to boss over. When you are asking for a favor, do not demand for any particular requirements even if you feel the need.

2. Give the owners their choice on how to link: This is one mistake that many tend to do. They ask the webmaster to use specific anchor texts to the link in the site so that the context of their link remains. But why would the person use the anchor text of your wish in his site? You must leave anchor text which must be used for your link to the webmaster. Be sure that if you make demands for such anchor texts, you will not get any links at all since you are not even paying them and trying to boss over and ordering them.

3. Proof read your mail: A mail with errors is a clear sign of unprofessional. So read your mails before sending them. No one would like to respond to a poorly written mail and they usually ignore such mails, forget about your request for links.

My final advice would be to avoid the above wrong ways when asking for a link. Try to be as polite, as clear and humble when placing your request for a link! Be professional but request in a personal and friendly tone and be sure to get links.
